While we often have good intentions the results of our words or gestures can become problematic. When we realize our intentions were not received within our intentions, we should avoid becoming defensive or dismissive. Dr. Cullen explains, "Accepting responsibility for our mistakes is essential in building a positive connection" (Cullen, 2008 p. 18).
DUMB STATEMENTS...
"I know exactly how you feel!"
"I don't think of you as..."
"I don't see color" or "I'm colorblind."
"You are so articulate."
Asking black people about their hair or hygiene.
"She/He is good person. She/he didn't mean anything by it."
"I don't see difference. We're all part of the same race, the human race."
"I don't care if you are pink, purple or orange, I treat all people the same."
Asking a transgender person, "Have you had the operation?"
